Nicole Marxen<\/a> says that she was \u201creally insecure\u201d when she started out in music. \u201cI didn\u2019t grow up playing music,\u201d she says on a recent phone call. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I got into by accident in my early 20s and was obsessed with it, but I always felt a little behind everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this year, Dallas-based Marxen, who cut her teeth with the band Midnight Opera, released her first solo EP, Tether<\/a><\/em>, and since the summer she\u2019s been playing live solo as well. \u201cForcing myself to do it on my own really helped me navigate some of those boundaries that I could not get past,\u201d she says. \u201cPlaying live by myself too has been a really good experience because you don\u2019t have anyone else up there to bounce energy off of or depend on. It\u2019s just you, so you need to be able to work a room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, Audiofemme<\/em> premieres the video for \u201cBones \/ Dust,\u201d directed by Salt Lake City-based Richard Krause. \u201cThe first time I heard \u2018Bones \/ Dust,\u2019 I knew I wanted to make a music video for it,\u201d writes Krause in his director\u2019s statement. \u201cNicole’s vocals are haunting yet beautiful, like a siren’s call. As I listened, atmospheric black-and-white images flooded my mind. A world encased in fog. Giant monsters emerging from the earth, coming for humanity. Shadows and light painting the scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
*\u201cHe came to me with some test renders and I was just blown away,\u201d says Marxen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n*
<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBones \/ Dust\u201d was one of the earliest songs that Marxen wrote for the EP, dating back about five or so years prior to the release of <em>Tether<\/em>. Much of the rest of the collection was written around 2018 and reflect Marxen\u2019s grief over the loss of her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe passed away ten years ago, but because I was so young when it happened and my life was so busy, I really didn\u2019t grieve until 2018,\u201d she says. “Things were just moving so fast and I had a lot of living to do before I was in a place where I felt safe and secure enough to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marxen was inspired to write – and to process that belated grief – while going through her mother\u2019s belongings. \u201cSorting through her stuff was really the thing that triggered it and left the floodgates open,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She points to \u201cMoonflower,\u201d from the EP, as a song that came out of this process. Marxen notes that, at the time, she was getting interested in plants and gardening, as her mother had been. \u201cI wish it was something that we could have experienced together, bonded over, but the fact that it found me regardless, I thought that was really beautiful,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring these songs to life, Marxen knew that she would have to work solo. \u201cLooking back on it now, I understand it a little more, that it was a pretty integral part of my grieving process to do something with those songs alone,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 400px; height: 307px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3353700180\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nicolemarxen.bandcamp.com\/album\/tether\">Tether by Nicole Marxen<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her solo debut, Marxen turned to producer Alex Bhore, with whom she had previously worked. \u201cI just had 100% trust in him that he was going to help me do the songs justice,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m still super proud with what we were able to come up with and I love working with him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gradually, the EP came together over the course of about a year and a half. \u201cNow, I just trust the process so much more,\u201d she says. \u201cI trust that we\u2019re going to do songs justice and, if it takes a while, that\u2019s okay. Sometimes, it takes time to find what\u2019s right. That\u2019s the only way that I want to write music right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marxen began performing live again in July; she\u2019s been playing mostly in and around Dallas, but one gig took her to a Victorian home in Wichita, Kansas. \u201cThey were just the coolest family ever that opened their house to this goth night,\u201d she says of the hosts for the show. \u201cThe promoter found my music somehow and asked if I wanted to do it and I said yes, so I went and didn\u2019t know a single person, but by the end of the night I had a million new friends and it was really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With shows lined up in Fort Worth, Dallas and Denton this December, Marxen is also at work with producer Bhore on a full-length album. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve expressed my grief fully and now it\u2019s time to figure out what else I need to say,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHonestly, [<em>Tether<\/em>] just helped me find myself as an artist.
