AF 2019 IN REVIEW: Our Favorite Albums & Singles of The Year

Every year I keep a running list of new album releases. The idea is that I’ll have new stuff on my radar, along with a go-to playlist if I’m feeling adventurous (or bored) and want to hear something new. This year that list grew to nearly 9,000 songs, and I’m still adding stuff I missed from this year to it. When it came time to make my year-end list, I had some ideas about what would be on it, but I decided to do something more immersive than I’d done years prior (basically narrowing my list down to ten albums). This year, I decided to rank every record I listened to that came out in 2019, resulting in a list of more than 200 albums. That’s a lot, certainly. It’s my job, of course, to listen to music. But what was more mind-boggling was that, when I made a separate list of albums I hadn’t had a chance to listen to or simply didn’t stick in my mind, it was more than double that number. Y’all, a lot of music came out in 2019. And a lot of it was really, really good.

I think our list at Audiofemme is unique in that it gives each of our regular writers (and some of our contributors) complete ownership over their favorites, and that makes our list unusually eclectic. That’s especially true this year; last year’s lists featured a lot of love for Mitski and Janelle Monae, while this year’s lists were so disparate there’s very little crossover from list to list. So while it’s hard to choose one overarching narrative around who slayed hardest this year – Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen releasing the best albums of their careers, Big Thief releasing two amazing records, Jamila Woods and FKA Twigs going big on concept albums – I think we all know that person was Lizzo.

Chelsea Wolfe Reflects on Birth of Violence

On Birth of Violence, released this past September, Chelsea Wolfe shines in quiet introspection. Eschewing the heavy crunch of 2017’s Hiss Spun, Wolfe drew from folk music influences and acoustic sounds, weaving threads of spirituality, perceptions of femininity, personal reflection and modern, dark Americana that stands out as both a highlight of 2019 releases and of Wolfe’s career. Complex, emotional and aware, it is Birth of Violence is a fitting soundtrack for the end of the decade.

Wolfe had been on the go for years and says that making Birth of Violence gave her a chance to settle into her Northern California home, where she had moved two years earlier and would record the album. That process came with its own challenges, she explains in an email interview – “mainly of making a great-sounding record in a makeshift home studio.”

“The catalyst for this acoustic album was that I was starting to lose my mind on the road last year, and there was this nagging voice telling me to take a break or I was going to snap. These acoustic songs came out during those moments, as some sort of personal solace,” she says. “So, I decided to block out much of this past year to make Birth of Violence, and to take some time to focus on personal healing. It’s not easy to stop a moving train, and it isn’t fun to tell your bandmates and team that you need to take a break, but I knew it was something I needed to do, and luckily everyone was really supportive.”

The result was not what Wolfe herself had initially expected. “To be honest, I first envisioned this album being extremely stripped down, just guitar and vocals and a few overdubs, but as the songs were coming together, it felt lonesome – the process of working alone, but more importantly the songs themselves felt a bit far away, like they needed a setting to live in,” Wolfe says. She brought in bandmate Ben Chisholm to engineer and help produce the album. “Ben and I have worked together for about 10 years now so our musical language flows easily, and I feel like he really understood my abstract concept of this album being my ‘space western’ sonically.”

Initially, Wolfe’s influences for this album came from folk singers like Joan Baez, Odetta and Jackson C. Frank. Later on, she incorporated David Bowie and John Lennon into that mix, which she credits with inspiring her to add drums, overdubs and other elements that would go on the build Birth of Violence.

A little more than a month before the album’s release, I caught Chelsea Wolfe live in Los Angeles. She played a semi-secret show inside an East Hollywood venue called The Virgil with Ionna Gika, who would be her tour mate in the fall, opening the night. The space was small and full, although not uncomfortably so, and when Wolfe played, she dominated the room. She wore black that night, a gold light shining on her and brocade drapery framing the stage. Her new songs – like “The Mother Road,” “American Darkness” and “Deranged for Rock & Roll” – brimmed with a striking mix of power and intimacy. It was one of those shows where snapping a cell phone pic felt inappropriate, maybe even intrusive.

In October, Wolfe headed out on her acoustic tour. “This was probably the first time I had a strong, cohesive vision for the stage setup: a way to bring my personal ritual to the live set,” says Wolfe. “Taking time off the road gave me the space to tend to my spiritual practice and learn how to bring it with me in small ways when I returned to touring.”

Her stage for this tour included the use of branches and fabric that she describes as reminiscent of “the remnants of a beautiful old shipwreck” and performed in a circle, which she says provided a spot for her to focus her energy. Her stage wear was made by Jenni Hensler, with whom Wolfe has worked throughout her career. “This collection was very Victorian-modern, inspired by the term “soiled dove,” a common name for prostitutes in the Victorian Era. We wanted to own that phrase and bring power to it; do it our way,” says Wolfe. “I’ve never connected with the traditional, societal definition of “feminine,” and have been expressing my own version of femininity since I started out – balancing my soft and strong sides, sometimes leaning more to one side than the other. On Hiss Spun and Birth of Violence I really started to embrace the feral, instinctual side of being a woman, and put a lot of that into the music, the artwork, and the stage.”

Her trek across the U.S. and Canada had a few of its own surprises. In Detroit, she was expected to play Senate Theater, but there was a last minute change of venue. “The show was moved to a small bar, and ended up being this super energized, fun night where we were all crammed in this warm space together on a cold night. That was one of the first shows on the acoustic tour where I really felt things coming together,” she says. In Texas, she had another kind of surprise. “There were certain haunted places, like in Dallas at the Texas Theatre where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested,” Wolfe recalls. “During sound check I felt a cold hand on my left shoulder and turned around, certain someone was there.”

As for 2020, Wolfe will hit the road again in March, when she takes the acoustic tour to Europe. After that, she says, she’ll begin writing the next album with bandmates Chisholm, Jess Gowrie and Bryan Tulao. She adds, “We’ll be announcing a few more tour dates for 2020 soon.”

LIVE REVIEW: Chelsea Wolfe @ Irving Plaza

If in the past Chelsea Wolfe has been called a “siren” and a “goddess,” atop the stage at Irving Plaza on Tuesday she was a towering banshee. Swathed in lengths of white cotton – with matching, armpit-high gauntlets, might I add – Wolfe commanded the sold-out crowd with pointed intensity. Wolfe’s tour comes hot on the heels of her 2017 LP Hiss Spun, and by the looks of ticket sales and the gargantuan purple tour bus parked outside Irving Plaza, must be going quite well.

Hiss Spun is Wolfe’s latest offering on longtime label Sargent House. The record is deeply varied, textural, and above all else: heavy. Part of Wolfe’s allure is her ability to craft dark and gruesome instrumental landscapes – often craggy and unwelcoming – and then invite the listener in with her radiant voice. It is a contrast that bodes surprisingly well live. Wolfe is one of those singers whose live vocals not only do the record justice – they sound better, somehow, in person.

As one would hope, Wolfe is an austere performer; she barely says a word between songs. Her black-clad backing band do their work with fervor and excitement, but never distract from the great white witch at center stage, piercing us with charcoal-rimmed eyes. They played a generous hour-plus set, bookending favorites from previous records, like “Carrion Flowers” and “Feral Love,” with material from Hiss Spun.

Wolfe treated us to a two-song encore, beginning with a solo acoustic performance of “Halfsleeper,” from her 2010 debut. Her isolated voice was all the more staggering, and even spooky given the season. It was only then that I noticed a large black “sun” suspended above her like a dark totem. Soon Wolfe’s band rejoined her, plunging into the heady sendoff of “Scrape,” awash in distortion. As she floated off the stage, it was apparent that Chelsea Wolfe’s performances allow her to embody many things – she’s a siren, goddess, and banshee all at once.

“Thanks to everyone who listened and was respectful. And to those of you that talked through the whole performance: that was fucked up.” These parting words from Chelsea Wolfe, spoken in a rather resigned tone before she played the final song of her set opening for The Eels Sunday night at the historical Apollo Theater in Harlem, characterize everything that’s difficult about the reality of a being a supporting act. It’s often a bit of an uphill battle for attention, unless, of course you’re getting negative heckles or requests for songs from Lynard Skynard’s catalogue (note: “Play ‘Free Bird’!” is not even ironically funny anymore, idiots).

While no one requested that Wolfe play Southern rock classics, her ultra-early set made the full attention of the audience pretty hard to come by.  As I would come to learn after Wolfe played, fans of Mark Oliver Everett have a pretty myopic focus and a lowered capacity for interpreting anything less fluffy than “I Like Birds,” so perhaps Wolfe’s grandiose, noise-inflected baroque pop was simply over the heads of those attendees who were able to get a babysitter in time to hoof it up to Harlem to catch her performance. As the event was seated, Wolfe also had to contend with tardy folks who were innocently (if obliviously) trying to find their seats. It might be par for the course, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating, especially for a performer as artful and serious as Wolfe.

The tragedy here is that those who talked through Wolfe’s set or trickled in late missed a transcendent performance from a powerful artist. Accompanied by a violin and synths from two musicians bookending her on either side, Wolfe was able to fill the opulent space with a sound just as lavish. She played guitar through most of her songs, which at times meant picking spidery rhythms. But even more compelling was her ability to take droning chords that might have been abrasive in less deft hands and turn that textural noise into a thing of sublime, tortured beauty. As on her latest record, 2013’s veritable tour-de-force Pain is Beauty, Wolfe’s striking vocals were the truest thrill, sweeping and swelling and emotionally wrought, though never overly so; her sound was right at home in the ornate, neo-Classical surroundings of the Apollo, gleaming through her austere stage plot like the gilded balconies in the shadowy theater.

Side-by-side with the reverent, almost gospel-esque quality of Wolfe’s performance, The Eels seemed almost crassly kitschy. I should probably admit that my interest in The Eels has never really managed to stretch beyond bizarro alt-rock smash hit “Novocaine for the Soul” (which they didn’t actually play), but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t curious or optimistic about the set. Everett has a reputation for being a consummate, warm, and humorous performer and song-writer, and I gave his band more than the benefit of the doubt. But opening with a Jiminy Cricket song and ending with a cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Turn On Your Radio” places the band’s oeuvre in an all-too-accurate and rather unfortunate context. Singing a song called “It’s a Motherfucker” and having it still come off as cutesy is clearly The Eels’ bread and butter, and to some, I guess that’s impressive (though the mostly empty mezzanine wasn’t ultra convincing). Everett’s cavalier repartee cut directly into the dignity that the band’s elaborate set-up attempted to to approach, and seemed almost an affront to the hallowed venue. Early on, when he made a joke about the audience being the “whitest” Apollo has ever hosted, it rang too true for me not to wince at the nervous chuckles around me.

The moral of the story here is that it takes a certain kind of gravitas to pull off a show in such a venerated space, especially when you’re a cultural outsider. Wolfe rose to that challenge gloriously, giving her performance an essential weight and elegance. Maybe next time, more people will be paying attention.

From elaborate roll-outs to surprise releases, 2013 was a banner year for comebacks, break-outs, break-ups, and overnight sensations.  The fact that the most oblique content could cause rampant controversy to reverberate through the blogosphere turned every song into a story and made every story seem epic.  At the heart of it all are the sounds that defined this particular calendar year, from electronic pop to punk rock  to hip-hop to hardcore and everything in between.

In a given year, thousands of records are released, many of them having upwards of ten tracks apiece.  So it’s actually physically impossible to hear them all, and can be downright daunting to wrangle them into some kind of intelligible countdown.  But we certainly have done our best, here cataloging the tunes we just couldn’t stop playing, and stuck fast in our heads when we finally managed to turn them off.
